WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: average

Weather conditions:

Main channel of Lena had ice-break on 8 June, ice-break on the delta channels occurred 5-7 days earlier than usial (18-19 June), water level during spring flood was average. Strong storms, tempearture drops and snowfalls were noted from mid June. Summer was relatively dry.

Date of 50% snow-cover:
Date of ice-break on rivers: 19.06
Date of final loss of snow: 15.06

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Meteorological conditions of spring and summer were close to average in a number of years, which provided optimal conditions for breeding. Lemming numbers were very low, which affected waterfowl breeding success. Buzzards had small clutches, Arctic Skuas nested with low density. Snowy Owls and Arctic Foxes were virtually absent, Pomarine and Long-tailed Skuas did not breed. Waders, gulls, Brent Goose, King Eider were successfully breeding (chicks appearred), Steller's Eiders failed. Red Phalaropes and Little Stints were numerous, despite predation by Skuas in brood-raring period. Broods of Pectoral Sandpipers, Curlew Sandpipers, Turnstones and Grey Plovers were recorded. Spotted Redshank nests were found in the northern part of Delta for the first time.

Summary of fauna studies:

Numbers and breeding success of brant geese, King eider, Steller's eider, squas and gulls was studied. Reproduction was successful (hatching was noted) in all above species, except for the Steller's eider.
